A “tired” look

The Samsung Galaxy J7 is primarily PHABLET the version of the Galaxy J5. Here, the goal is to provide the different screen diagonals consumers so they can choose the phone size that suits them. A tactic already proven with the Galaxy A range, which should again make the recipe with J, which is for a less demanding public premium components.

No surprise design level with this device so and it has exactly the same features, very common, as the Galaxy J5. As stated Gaël when the small model test, it seems that Samsung went for the old pots to make a not so great jam. This J7 therefore adopts a slightly dated look.

The mobile consists almost matte plastic entirety, and it seems even a layer of plastic has even been added over the metal edge of the phone where physical buttons are also made of plastic. The hull, plastic and smooth, is removable and reveals a protruding dorsal sensor, such as Samsung once integrated. That makes us even think that the manufacturer has used old stocks to produce this series.

At the front, it’s the same impression that is left, either by integrating the screen (with the thin black border and a tile that pulls on the blue when turned off), or integration of touch buttons very LEDs down the facade.

Well, in overall, the J7 appears to be a well-designed phone, but we do not hide our disappointment with a look that will not seduce us because we have the impression of having seen a thousand times. Good news: it J7 allows himself to be even thinner than the J5 (151.7 x 76 x 7.8 mm)

Display. Definition small, beautiful steps

in terms of display, Samsung opted for an AMOLED display, and has proven its expertise in this field. The screen of the Galaxy J7 is very bright (394 cd / m2), outdoor fashion is still perfect this brightness (425 cd / m2) and contrast is infinite, offering deep blacks.

as always, Samsung offers different display modes: AMOLED cinema, Adaptive, AMOLED Photo and basic. And whoever comes closest rendering “real” is the basic mode. On the latter, we measure a very good color temperature, ranging between 6600 and 6900 K. The saturation is also good in this mode. It seems that we have more or less the screen calibrations on J5 and J7.

TouchWiz and Marshmallow

Unlike the Galaxy A 2016, which was under Android Lollipop, Samsung has finally decided to install its new native Android devices Marshmallow. The Galaxy J7 2016 – but also all the other Galaxy J 2016 – is Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow with security updates installed by default in April 2016. A good point when we know that this mid-year, yet few manufacturers to offer the latest version of Android on their devices.

As for the rest of the interface, TouchWiz there is no real surprise, it is the same interface as that found on the Galaxy S7 and S7 edge, with some options in less. Among the new features (and unless one is wrong), there is the Outdoor Mode, which increases the brightness of the screen, above the maximum level for 15 minutes. A mode that will remain active if the screen is still on after 15 minutes.

For the rest, we simply note the functions present on the Galaxy S and which are not on this model, Learn the Game Center or the Always on display to the screen. Overall, everything is fluid and navigating on the latest version of TouchWiz.

An attractive Exynos 7870

in terms of performance, the Samsung Galaxy team J7 not quite the same weapons as the J5. When it has to settle for an aging Snapdragon 410, J7 is in the novelty and features a Exynos 7870. Announced in February, this is the first time we see this processor on a terminal of the trade.

This is an Exynos 7870 SoC midrange, engraved in 14 nm, which consists of eight Cortex-A53 cores clocked 1.6 GHz. He should be able to compete with the Snapdragon 625 Qualcomm processor that will soon be possible to experience during extensive testing puisqu’Asus has integrated its Zenfone 3. Difficult to find his adversaries so, but he promises to much better performance than the D5.

Samsung Galaxy J7 (2016) Samsung Galaxy J5 Samsung Galaxy A5 (2016)
Screen 720p 720p 1080p
SoC Exynos 7870 Snapdragon 410 Exynos 7580
PC Mark 5251 4109 4090
3DMark Ice Storm Unlimited General 8624 4433 7968
3DMark Ice Storm Unlimited Graphics 7890 3864 7489
3DMark Ice Storm Unlimited Physics 12,783 9140 10,267
GFXBench (Manhattan offscreen / onscreen) 4.8 / 9.4 FPS 1.8 / 3.8 FPS 4.8 / 4.8 FPS
GFXBench (T-Rex offscreen / onscreen) 12/19 FPS 5.2 / 9.3 FPS 14/14 FPS

And that’s what we see when we pass under the mobile test benchmarks. All results converge on the same conclusion: the J7 is much more efficient than the J5 (2016) and even rivals the A5 (2016), although the latter is anyway not a lightning war. Nevertheless, this ends classify J7 among the range of environments, even in performance.

On further testing, with GameBench and Real Racing 3, we see that the chip still maintains its frequency maximum, which allows the game to always display between 20 and 40 FPS. It is also an average of 30 frames per second. This is what was expected of this chip, and the comparison with the Snapdragon 6xx series is justified.

Communication and GPS

the Samsung Galaxy J7 is compatible with the 4G class 4, and on all bands of French frequencies (800/1800/2600 MHz). It’s the same thing for J5. The grip network is good, call quality is at the rendezvous, and the GPS works perfectly.

A disappointing photo sensor

the J7 features the same sensor as the J5, 13 megapixels, and with an aperture of f / 1.9. However, the results obtained with this terminal are a little different, and it is more qualities. For example, blurring effects on clichés, very present with the J5, here are a little more moderate. Unfortunately, we did not have very good conditions for our photographs, to the point that no risk overexposure.

What we like about this device is the speed triggering (except in HDR mode where it is frankly slow), but also the development. But as is often the case of an input product or mid-range, night photography is frankly poor quality.

Battery

in terms of autonomy, it is again facing a very good smartphone from Samsung. The manufacturer had already shown us with the Galaxy A and Galaxy S, and its range recidivism J. Our usual endurance test – an hour of HD video on YouTube with the brightness set to 200 cd / m2 – shows loss of only 7%, ranking it among the best mobile in this discipline.

Battery

  • J7 (2016) 93
  • J5 (2016) 93
  • A5 (2016) 90

in everyday use, this is the same since finding may get almost two days of autonomy of this smartphone without much difficulty. Strangely, the mobile is sometimes hungry autonomy during sleep sessions. Hoping that an update comes correct this slight defect.

Pricing and Availability

the Samsung Galaxy D7 2016 is currently selling in major physical stores or online. Its selling price for its launch is 299.90 euros. As for the J5 Three colors are available: black, white and gold

Conclusion

Verdict Samsung Galaxy J7 (2016)

One Samsung can not say to do in originality, and worse, even it seems that it uses stock funds. It is especially shocking when you see the quality of mobile brand has released lately.

as much screen measures are good, whether in brightness, contrast or color temperature, as the definition is inadequate. 720p on a slab 5.5 inches and about 300 euros, it is not common …

We appreciate the fact that Samsung offers smartphones midrange Android 6.0 directly Marshmallow and found effective interface TouchWiz on the Galaxy already interview S7. It lacks some features compared to the version S7, but it’s very convincing.

We are very pleasantly surprised by the performance of this smartphone and its chip Exynos 7870. It is comfortable with demanding games, far more than the Snapdragon 410 J5.

Strangely, it is not packed by the picture of this phone, but it is far from the disaster interview on testing the J5. However, it is far from what the manufacturer does best

as for the J5, autonomy is very good, either on our standard test or in daily use. Note however that the day seems pretty greedy.

although the Galaxy J7 (2016) is doing well in some areas, one can not help but be disappointed, as the Galaxy J5 (2016). It must be said that the brand had accustomed us to better this year, with the Galaxy A and Galaxy S really impressive.

Here, right out of the box, the impression is mixed because of a “tired” design and a less obvious build quality. Even the slice, which consists of metal, seems covered with a layer of gray paint which leaves a strange feeling.

Too bad, because autonomy is good, the performance also, and installation under Marshmallow is welcome. But all is not balanced, some features reminiscent of the entry level, while others are good enough to claim the midrange.

Unfortunately, that J7 (2016) is struggling to justify a starting price of 300 euros. This is typically the kind of phone that really leaves us marble, as well as its investment in the mobile market is not clear, almost encroaching on the range A.

  • positives
    • overall performance
    • very good Autonomy
    • Android 6.0 Marshmallow
  • negatives
    • display resolution (720p)
    • disappointing picture Party
    • Design little work
