Testing the Samsung Galaxy J5: a good mid-range, except for … – LesMobiles.com

Samsung decided to restructure its Galaxy family in 2014. It now focuses on four lines, the J is one of the less ambitious, with On and behind the A and E. The first model was the very modest, if not downright disappointing, but the Galaxy J1 Korean decided to catch up with the J5 and J7 Galaxy that ultimately put the range straddling the entry and midrange.

For the simplified catalog, there are still so has some way but the Galaxy J5 we received for this test should help us see it a little clearer on Samsung’s intentions with this range J.

Samsung Galaxy J5

First things first. The Galaxy J5 was launched in France at a price of € 199. A niche already busy, including many Chinese players who are willing to do in the technical bidding. It’s not really the case of Samsung, even if we still find some interesting details by looking a little closer as the use of a Super AMOLED panel, with the camera aperture f / 1.9 back or flash that accompanies the front. Here are the full specs:

  • Lollipop + TouchWiz Android 5.1.1
  •

  • Super AMOLED HD screen of 5 inches
  •

  • quad-core Snapdragon 410 chipset 1.2GHz

A range of mileu rather neat

The presentations being made now are entering the thick of it with design. Considering the Samsung habits with the smallest smartphones, we must confessed that although we were not expecting much in this field but we are finally pleased to discover that the changes effected in the top of its catalog are beginning to spread. The Galaxy J5 surprised by the quality of its finishes and gives off a nice solid feel, accentuated by a weight altogether high but well distributed, even if the design does not fundamentally change.

Samsung Galaxy J5: left / right

We find indeed the elements usually present on the input range of Samsung smartphones: sober colors (black and white), a window that covers the front while leaving room for the famous mechanical button and the speaker around the screen, a plastic frame silver and a removable cover for access to the battery and microSIM and microSD ports, with the release of the speaker. The whole is rather more harmonious and better job

The thicker frame absorbs part of the screen edges that seem a little closer while the rounded shape that was given to him on the sides , where as always distributed power buttons (right) and volume (left), makes the pleasant grip. The connectors (microUSB and jack) are integrated in a lightweight bottom recess which, without bringing anything ergonomically, reflects at least the attention to detail.

The rear reminds his side A Galaxy with its pearly appearance and layout of the different elements. The camera is centered at the top, with the flash on one side and the output from the speaker on the other. The latter benefits the passage of light relief from the camera as it prevents it from being blocked when the smartphone is laid flat. So there is not much to complain about, except perhaps only apprécirions us a hint of originality for the future but it is a great achievement.

Sometimes just a slab Super AMOLED …

And the surprises continue at power since the screen of Galaxy J5 is a pleasure to use, but especially to watch. Certainly this is not the best if you stop the numbers, 5-inch, 1280 x 720 pixels and 294 pixels per inch, but they do not define alone the quality of a display. The display technology is used also for many. This is the Super AMOLED we find here, with bright colors and strong contrasts that we know, and some do not necessarily like elsewhere but this has never been our case. Added to this well-viewing angles and good brightness, it is still possible to increase with Exterior mode for too sunny days. You will enjoy it view photos and video, play or surf the web or even simply in Android

TouchWiz has melted this summer!

The Google OS is here delivered in version 5.1.1 Lollipop and accompanied as usual with Samsung, the famous TouchWiz overlay. Korean nevertheless had the good idea to reduce the latter to save the internal memory it no longer remains that 4.5 GB (8 in total). So much so that it finally much left: the colorful interface, themes, simplified mode, power saving modes, and three home … only applications

Warning. These are not the only ones that are added as a result of Google since Samsung is committed to preinstall Microsoft applications on its smartphones but it is amusing to note that they eventually replace his, which there are only S Planner for the calendar, Smart Manager for maintenance, and Galaxy Apps for applications. It’s not so bad, especially as Microsoft offers 100 GB of online storage with onedrive. Must still use its solution rather than the Google Drive course …

in play Disappointing but good video playback

This lightweight wrapper also done much good because the system is running like a charm despite a configuration rather modest. The Galaxy J5 is based on the Qualcomm Snapdragon 410 with CPU quad-core Cortex-A53 1.2 GHz and Adreno 306 GPU, we find here along with 1.5GB of RAM. Things go wrong however a little multimedia and especially in play, but first let’s look at the benchmarks for fans of raw performance

. Samsung Galaxy J5: AnTuTu Samsung Galaxy J5: Basemark OS II Samsung Galaxy J5: 3Dmark

There is no real surprise. Qualcomm’s entry-level chipset is not his first visit to the writing and records here of normal scores: 21 000 points AnTuTu, on Basemark OS 500 and 4000 on 3DMark Ice Storm Unlimited. This is not good folichon and GPU is largely responsible. No need to look far if some games, 3D only turn a little slowly. Angry Birds Go! for example …

Samsung Galaxy J5: Angry Birds Go!

We did however not encountered particular problems video playback if it’s the eternal problem of compatibility of some codecs with native player, even if Samsung is already doing better than Google. It reads subtitles and supports more codecs but still not as much as a VLC for example. The situation is the same in audio.

So you can at least enjoy the beautiful screen of the Galaxy J5 for watching videos. The speaker is not bad either for this price category since it is relatively strong while maintaining a clear and not too loud sound at maximum volume.

This in released in photo … especially when it’s day

After reading finally comes the catch, why Samsung chose a first sensor 13 megapixel he associated with a LED flash and a bright optical opening of f / 1.9 and a second 5 megapixel also associated with an LED flash (or more accurately a flashlight as it lights up continuously). The application that the order is rather simplistic with a small selection of automatic modes accessible from the viewfinder and the main settings stuck in a textual menu.

There are still a Pro mode but it gives no the hand on the white balance, exposure and sensitivity (ISO). The Galaxy J5 lends itself more to spontaneous decision. There is also a shortcut for chopping quickly. Press twice in a row the Home button from any screen, and the application opens. It works even with the screen off. The outbreak is becoming almost instantaneous.

Samsung Galaxy J5: Camera!

So Hopefully automatic settings are calibrated. And it is rather the case. Overall, we are satisfied with the results delivered by the main camera, open day at least. Clichés are usually detailed, despite a small trend smoothing. This is particularly obvious on an animal fur but barely visible in the example below, we particularly appreciate the fair color reproduction and good brightness management. Two areas in which the Galaxy J5 is generally doing well.

Do not wait, however no miracle at night or the front camera as a rule elsewhere. The absence of autofocus is the main cause. The selfies often lack details and sharpness. Note that the accompanying flashlight is not very powerful and quite dramatically alters the colors.

Not balanced enough to please all

If you are looking for a 4G smartphone has a nice screen for watching videos and a decent camera at less than € 200, this Galaxy J5 will do, but we should not expect much more. Gamers can clearly look elsewhere. We also regret that the internal memory is so narrow, even though Samsung has made an effort to not to clutter with TouchWiz and offers microSD port.

For the same price, it may be worth better to turn to the more balanced 50 Diamond Archos. It offers a more comfortable and better memory performance without disappoint in the chosen fields of Galaxy J5.
