Labo Photo: Microsoft Lumia 950 face the Galaxy S6 and iPhone 6S – DigitalVersus

To complete our recent test of Microsoft Lumia 950 and to clarify a little more our opinion on its photographic qualities, we decided to offer to complement this article, which amounts more detail on the differences in behavior of this smartphone deal Two of its main rivals, the Samsung Galaxy S6 and 6s iPhone.

Before continuing, note at the outset that if Lumia 950 won only three out of five stars in the “photo” section, this is not the intrinsic quality of his photographs which received Royal Assent, but some pretty horrendous failures in its interface . Starting with autofocus that shows too capricious to be always reliable. Even when light conditions are perfect, he happens to be a bit slow. At a time when competition cowboy shoot faster than seasoned, it is clearly perfectible point, which can make you miss some shots. And when the autofocus begins to need several seconds before finding the target, while the light is perfect, we begin to get excited beyond reason on the smartphone. Again, this does not happen systematically, fortunately, but often enough to be both noticeable and irritating.

After shooting, it’s another problem that awaits the user in the gallery images. The smartphone automatically making several improvements of his own on captured photos, it applies an admittedly remarkable post treatment in most cases, but sometimes takes several seconds to load. Result, it happens too often that we come across the message “Adding finishes” at the corner of the image gallery. Such treatment often takes one to two seconds or more. And in rare cases, we even got the device mouline indefinitely, until we relancions application.

The good news is that the two defects mentioned at the moment should be easily rectifiable through an update. It remains to hope that Microsoft does not take too long to make it available. Things could go even faster than Windows 10 Mobile lets you update virtually all native applications without having to wait for a more comprehensive update of the OS. But to date we have not heard about it. It’s a shame since these points tarnish a photo experience that could have been close to perfect. Because the interface function here is rich enough and even offers manual management of a number of parameters (speed, focus, light, white balance, HDR …). It is also possible to record necessary files to DNG (RAW). We therefore miss to update the test 950 when Microsoft has corrected the problems.

Finally, you have been a number not understand how we could write that the level of detail was good, but not equivalent to the best of its kind. We decided to compare the current champion, the Samsung Galaxy S6. And we added the best selling smartphone today, namely the iPhone 6s, for good measure. In terms of colorimetry and dynamic range, no doubt, the Lumia 950 has nothing to envy anyone.

it is even possible to do much better in terms of performance in low light (two above visual), while the S6 and 6s are not, however sleeves in this area. You can see for yourself in this confrontation between the three models . However, that’s another story for the level of overall details of his shots. The “general” word has its importance here since if one looks only at the center of his productions, details abound indeed. But looking at the examples below, we see that the level of detail is not uniform over the entire picture. When zooming on the top left area that contains a map, the Lumia 950 is significantly less accurate than its two competitors. So much so that it becomes difficult to read or decipher the name of the green areas, while they remain visible with the Galaxy S6 and iPhone 6s.

A largely due to the problem in mind, we have already identified several generations of smartphones and Sony Xperia Z which is very difficult to correct after the fact via a simple update.

Worse, when highlights the blue feather on the bottom left of the screen, its just the Berezina for the smartphone, with rendering a far cry from that of the Galaxy S6.

However, the opposite, that is, on the bottom right edge, where we find the red car, the result is much better for the Lumia 950, with a made equivalent to that of its two competitors of the day.

Ultimately, these unwelcome distortions will probably not interfere most users, but photographers looking for a smartphone “to troubleshoot the occasion,” perfectionists and even those who took used to crop their photos afterwards notice the defects.
