Changing philosophy major from Samsung’s new Galaxy Alpha offers a strapping brushed aluminum and bevelled so “diamond cut” as the iPhone 5 is beautiful, c ‘ is thin, very successful, no doubt! Better late than never

But to make this aesthetic molting, Galaxy Alpha had to make some concessions cruel: it has no memory card slot, and its battery capacity not exceeding 1860 mAh. There are only 32 GB of internal memory, but its processor Exynos 5 to eight cores supported by 2GB of RAM should do a good job. After several days of testing on both models (one silver and one gold), here’s our verdict

The most elegant smartphone Samsung

We were very disappointed with the design of the Galaxy S5 (and horrified by the Galaxy mini S5), but the Galaxy Alpha saves honor designers Samsung. The device displays a perfect template: the 4.7-inch screen is the best compromise, especially since the device is very thin and lightweight. Its handling is perfect and very harmonious aesthetic. Of course, the rear seat remains plastic, but his coat is soft to the touch, and it’s for a good cause.! Rest removable battery is a very important detail

Gilding Galaxy Alpha is lighter than real gold, this is good news .

The golden version of the Galaxy Alpha does not the mistake of being too flashy: the color is unobtrusive, almost invisible to white light. The silver version is more conventional, but equally elegant

The good news is that the Galaxy Alpha maintains one of the best finds of the Galaxy S5: a screen AMOLED which offers boosted brightness in bright light. Wedged at 340 cd / m² maximum brightness manually, its automatic brightness can reach 452 cd / m², and even 505 cd / m² if white only fills half the screen. Clearly, the screen will be visible in daylight

Samsung AMOLED technology provides the rest. Angles excellent vision and infinite contrast with excellent black level. Color fidelity is really good as “Basic” mode, disabling the “Auto Screen Tones” which involves saving energy option. However, the picture is much more enjoyable to watch in cinema or Adaptive mode, with most flattering colors

small problem with this screen is its definition of 1280 x 720 pixels on AMOLED matrix grid diagonally. Smoothing characters (antialiasing) is very effective on a conventional LCD screen grid vertically … but it does not work on the matrix AMOLED Samsung diagonal grid. So, 10 or 15 cm from the screen, you can see with the naked eye a few imperfections on the scriptures and the vertical and horizontal lines. It’s nothing serious, but it is frustrating given the price of the smartphone. Full HD screen Galaxy S5 does not have these little problems. The matrix of these AMOLED screens seems rather require a pixel density of 400 dpi, 300 dpi against a conventional LCD matrix

Powerful, but it quickly weakens

The Galaxy Alpha processor is a eight-core Exynos 5: four low-power (Cortex-A7 1.3 GHz), and four (high performance Cortex-A15 1.8GHz). Initially it was supposed to only use 4 cores simultaneously that of 8, assigning them intelligently important and light duties. But ultimately, he can use his eight cores at the same time always using the same distribution logic. And he does it quite well: everything is very smooth and fast in conventional applications and the Web. Sophisticated 3D games are playable … for a while.

For the problem of this processor is that it quickly reduces its output to prevent excessive rise in temperature. The machine does not heat up much, but it’s not good in his case: the processor heat has difficulty dissipating outside the box. Suddenly, the performances collapse quickly, especially in 3D. The Galaxy Alpha displays 55 frames per second at its first test Epic Citadel, and slows to 39 fps thereafter. Louder still, these three results Antutu test:

Autonomy mixed

It’s the little weakness of this smartphone. Its range is not great, though, with respect to its low battery, the camera is doing very well in our tests. It rises almost 14 hours, screen on, when very little used, and survives 8:33 minutes to complete our new test procedure more intense. Two excellent scores, permitted by the low consumption of its AMOLED screen. But it takes less than 15 hours in voice conversation (off screen), which beating down a little in practice. The unit will still be a good day of normal use, but it will recharge quickly at night if used extensively, especially to play.

Almost at level Galaxy S5 photo and video

Aside from its lower resolution (12 megapixels to 16: 9), the photo sensor Alpha Galaxy offer a few details, the same performance as the Galaxy S5. Pictures are sometimes blurry, but the device triggers fast and successful shots offer a good level of detail, with a soft touch present, but clean. Only the colors are a bit too saturated, it is the policy of Samsung to flatter our retinas. The video is of the same ilk. Alpha software offers the same features as the S5: HDR video (without stabilization), 4K (or stabilization without HDR), HDR, and easy to select various modes

Charming, but way too expensive

The Galaxy Alpha is a good smartphone, despite autonomy and power a bit frustrating. The problem is its too expensive: 650 euros for a device with 32 GB of internal memory (26 actually) without memory card reader, without seals with just a HD screen and a modest battery Samsung … already set up a repayment offer of 70 euros until November. That’s something, but frankly, if we had to put 5 stars to this unit, it would be 550 euros maximum.
