Rent by Samsung – UFC Que Choisir

Samsung launches Up2You, an offer that allows to rent a latest smartphone cry for a period of 24 months. The Galaxy S7 is well leased 27 € per month, a monthly rent of up to € 36 with optional insurance. For the Galaxy S7 Edge takes 30 to 39 € / month. Obviously, this is not so simple. Withdrawal, breach of contract early … These are clauses to know before you commit.

650 or 700 € for one last cry of Samsung smartphones, everyone did not or inclination nor the means. To sell its Galaxy S7 and S7 Galaxy Edge, the manufacturer offers to French consumers to lease. The offer, called Up2You, is available only on the Internet (1). The customer must pay an initial payment of € 89 (S7) or 119 € (S7 Edge) and then pay a monthly rent of € 27 or € 30 respectively for a period of 24 months. It is possible to take out insurance breaks or so breakage and theft, in which case the rents go up to 34 or 36 € for the S7 and 37 or 39 € for the S7 Edge. After four months of age, it is possible to change smartphone (Samsung plans to expand the range of available devices). Samsung does not offer an option to buy out of contract. The customer is supposed to send his smartphone in a normal wear condition. Good news, the shipping costs are offered in both directions. And the procedure is simple: a RIB, an ID, a few clicks, and the smartphone will normally be delivered within 24 hours. That’s the theory.

Firm commitment

In practice, you have of course a withdrawal period of 14 days, as required by law (2). Then, know that you do not sign anything with Samsung, which has purchased a turnkey solution to a service provider, Evollis (see box). Samsung will discharge automatically in case of problems. Then, the offer is a lease that commits you for a period of 24 months. Unable to terminate before the end, the customer is required to pay the rent until the end of his contract. After two years, so you will pay € 737 for a Galaxy S7 (or € 839 for a Galaxy Edge S7) that you do not possess. A dead loss, in fact. Calculation (3) does not include any insurance, that are rarely interesting as the management of exclusions are many.

Keep your smartphone!

Out of contract, the customer must return the smartphone “ready to use without breaks or scorings or degradation” and with all accessories (charger, battery, headphones, etc.). A little too deep scratch of the screen, a visible shock, damaged connectors or oxidation trace, the customer will be punctured for compensation in the amount contractually agreed between 75 and 260 €. Better take care of the unit. And no doubt should be considered in all cases, keep the smartphone. The lease does not provide for a purchase option. But if the client does not return the device, a penalty will be deducted directly from their bank account. It is set at € 139.80 for GS7 and € 159.80 for the Edge GS7, relatively small amounts. Samsung would it interest that you keep the smartphone (which will provide the costs of recycling, transportation to rehabilitation)? Probably. But probably this option benefit does too. Add this penalty total rental cost (or € 787.80 in total for the GS7 and € 998.80 for the Edge GS7), and you become the owner of a smartphone which, moreover, still have value on the special occasion market. For example, the rating of the Samsung Galaxy S5, launched in April 2014 (24 months ago, so) at a price of € 679, reached between 220 and 250 €!

Evollis, service and competitor

Evollis, the provider designated by Samsung offers its own smartphone hire deals in the Uz’it brand. The Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge are offered as part of a lease without insurance, this time with a purchase option at the end of the 24-month commitment. The rent is 31 € and the purchase option set at € 104.98 for S7, after an initial payment of € 27.12. For S7 Edge, count € 36 / month and a purchase option at € 119.98 after a first payment of € 17.52. The Galaxy S7 thus amounts to € 876.10, the Galaxy S7 Edge 1 € 001.50, a little more than part of the Samsung offering.
