IFA 2014: Samsung Announces Galaxy Note Edge and its curved screen – 2 Photos
After the Galaxy Round and curved screen, Samsung has unveiled a new smartphone with an unusual design, the Edge Galaxy Note unveiled at IFA (Berlin, from 5 to 10 September). This phablette (contraction Anglicized English words phone and tablet ) sports a 5.6-inch screen with a straight edge is curved to the back cover (the English word ‘em > Edge meaning board). This gives a secondary screen on which are displayed in a vertical column icons of the most used applications, notifications and certain settings.
To justify the benefit of the curved screen, Samsung says it frees up space on the main screen and can function independently. For example, it is possible to receive notification of a new message on this extension while watching a video. In addition, this part remains active even when the main screen is idle or covered by a protective flap. Samsung has provided a software kit (SDK) for developers to adapt their applications and create relevant uses for this type of display. Although qu’inédit, this design is not really a surprise since the Korean firm had presented a prototype mobile pretty close to it at the Consumer Electronics Show in January 2013.

Apart from the curved screen, the Galaxy Note Edge is technically very similar to the Galaxy Note 4, unveiled at the same time. It is the same display quality HD Super Amoled Quad 2560 x 1440 pixels, a system on a chip (SoC) 2.7GHz quad heart, camera 16 megapixel sensor, a 3.7 megapixel front camera, 3 GB of memory RAM, 32GB of internal storage expandable by memory card, the ability to use a stylus Spen and Android 4.4 as a operating system. Both are compatible with 4G cellular networks / LTE.
There have been some small differences in dimensions including: the Galaxy Note 4 is slightly longer (153.5 mm), thicker (8.5 mm) but narrower ( 78.6 mm) Note that the Edge (151.3 x 82.4 x 8.3 mm). Their weight is almost identical: 176 g for 174 g Note 4 and Note for the Edge. Note 4 of the battery is a bit more powerful: 3220 mAh against 3000 mAh. In some countries, Note 4 will be offered with a heart SoC eightfold to 1.9 GHz. Samsung says that the Note Edge will be available in selected markets later this year but did not give its price.
If it will take a grip and extended tests to judge the usefulness of the concept, we can already consider that Samsung has pulled it off communication positioning itself as an innovative manufacturer. One way to occupy the land as his great rival Apple unveiled its iPhone 6 on September 9. The Galaxy Note 4 will be available to him in October.
