A small revolution is under way at Samsung. Shin Jong-kyun, head of Samsung’s mobile branch and the man behind the success of the Galaxy S, has been replaced by Dongjin Koh.
This is the end Jong-kyun Shin. He who was the head of the mobile arm of Samsung since 2009 and that Samsung owes its overwhelming dominance of the smartphone market in the world today is no longer a president of honor of this same branch, as saying sidelined. The man of 59 years was replaced by Dongjin Koh (54 years) as president of Mobile Communication Business Department of the Korean company.
A change manager who follows a change of CEO
The decision was taken by Jay Y. Lee, the current CEO of Samsung. Since May 2014, the month in which Lee Kun-hee, his father fell into a coma, it was he who actually directs Samsung. Among the many tasks of Jay Y. Lee, that of redressing the benefits of the mobile branch was not insignificant. And many investors asked him the head of Shin Jong-kyun since last year. The disappointing sales of Galaxy S6 and S6 edge were visibly good pretext. Promotions and other internal mobility of year end, announced a long time, have been the occasion.
A decision that was not easy to take when you know that Shin Jong-kyun is the man behind the Galaxy S3 and S4, those who have enabled Samsung to become the leader in the smartphone market. If Korean is now a leader in the smartphone market in the world, thanks to him. Faced with the many changes in the market in recent months, Samsung should however review its strategy.
Facing new competition
This head change is also intended to allow this mobile division to find a new breath. Not only Samsung has a lot to do with Apple, which always gives the vast majority of smartphone market profits, but more Korean faces pressure from increasingly strong Chinese manufacturers such as Huawei, Xiaomi or Lenovo, which tailgating in the market share.
Samsung presents Dongjin Koh as someone who “instrumental” in designing the Galaxy Note and Galaxy S6 5. It would also have some experience in the field of software since it would have also helped in the development of mobile payment services and the development of Knox, the brand security platform.
No short-term changes
Many experts polled by Reuters think it head change will not affect the short-term strategy Samsung. A few months before the release of the Galaxy S7, which we now know almost everything, the opposite would have been surprising. But it will be interesting to see the changes introduced by Samsung in the coming months. For those who would be interested in Korean, we can also advise you to read the excellent article of Voices published last weekend that talks about the new challenges facing Samsung: “Samsung, the empire of secrecy”.
