HTC One Max and Samsung Galaxy S5: the vulnerability of the … – Frandroid

In April, security researchers have revealed the existence of a security vulnerability affecting fingerprint sensors of some terminals like the Samsung Galaxy S5. The researchers used the Black Hat conference in Las Vegas to detail more the fault and announce that the Samsung Galaxy S5 and the HTC One Max were now out of danger thanks to the updates offered by manufacturers.

The Black Hat conference is a meeting place for experts in computer security. Yulong Zhang Tao and Wei were present this year for a session dedicated to the faults of fingerprint sensors on mobile devices. This is actually the two men had unveiled last April the security flaw affecting the fingerprint of the Samsung Galaxy S5 sensor. To recall, it was then possible for a Pirate recover from a distance all the fingerprints of terminal users . The two researchers used the conference to unveil that HTC One Max was also affected by this vulnerability , but the two terminals are from out of danger through the updates deployed by two manufacturers.

For the technical part, however it will be a little since this time, the only information comes from an email sent yesterday by the two researchers to the site ZDNet. In April, researchers had announced that only devices running Android 4.4 KitKat were affected by the flaw, because of a bad protection framework managing the fingerprint sensor . However, today we learned that some terminals are more protected than others, imposing a root privilege access to the sensor, unlike the system privilege used by HTC One Max and Samsung Galaxy S5. If you have one of two terminals in the hands, we advise you to accomplish as quickly updates and if possible, one that allows you to upgrade to Android 5.0 Lollipop .
