Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge: What differences between versions … – Frandroid

Like the Galaxy S5, the Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge will be available in several variations by region. On the one hand, to the United States for example, architecture Qualcomm Snadragon 820, on the other, for the European market and some Asian market, the Samsung Exynos 8890. Should we expect differences between those architectures ? Here’s what we know today.

Samsung-Qualcomm-Galaxy-S7

The Samsung Exynos 8890 ( SM-G930W8) and Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 (SM-G930A) are solutions that we already know, the two were introduced in 2015 and have many common characteristics. Let’s look at it more closely.

update: Finally, we confirmed that we have the right to the Samsung Exynos 8890 version Europpe, not the Snapdragon 820 as we thought

Qualcomm Snapdragon 820, for the United States

the Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 is a quad-core chip with four cores running Kryo to 2.15 GHz and 1.6 GHz these are CPU house. We already knew these house CPU solutions. Nevertheless, these are Kryo hearts 64-bit 32-bit replace Krait cores that are already there for years at Qualcomm. Last year, Qualcomm had been forced to leave on ARM solutions.

In fact, the arrival of Apple’s 64-bit SoC market with the A7 chip in 2013 caught short the entire industry, including Qualcomm, which had to go through to the hearts of ARM Snapdragon 810, which ended in failure we know. All eyes are now turned to these Kryo hearts supposed to erase the poor performance of the Snapdragon 810 once integrated into finished products.

Choosing a quad-core chip is somewhat strange, to a time when the majority of the mobile industry turns to octo-heart processor to achieve better energy performance according to the tasks.

on the side of the GPU is the Adreno 530 which is at the helm, assisted by a bandwidth that is higher with the use of LPDDR4. The DSP (the chip responsible treatment of flows from different sensors) was also reviewed, since now is the Hexagon 680 allowing gains in autonomy and additional capabilities through picture the Spectra ISP.

for the modem part, the Snapdragon 820 will integrate the X12 Snapdraon, a 4G modem category 12/13 supporting theoretical speeds of 600 Mbps downstream and 150 Mbps the uplink. Finally, note the presence of the U-LTE technology, like Wi-Fi 802.11ac MU-MIMO, Wi-Fi 802.11ad and automatic aggregation between Wi-Fi and 4G.

which may also explain the return of a solution on the Snapdragon Galaxy Sx range, the partnership between Samsung and Qualcomm, the US giant has chosen 14LPP process for its Samsung S820, which means 14 nm Low Power Plus burning. To recap, the 14LPP succeeds 14LPE used by the Exynos 7420 with a performance gain of about 10%.

Samsung Exynos 8890, for Europe and part of Asia

Unlike the Snapdragon 820, the Exynos 8890 is an octo-core with integrated quad-core Samsung Exynos M1 home 2.3 GHz and four Cortex-A53 cores clocked ARM 1.6 GHz for the tasks less greedy. The set runs on the ARM architecture arm big.little fashion HMP (Heterogeneous Multi-processing) which allows to use every heart independently. To connect the two clusters of four cores each, Samsung has developed its own system of interconnection: SCI Samsung Coherent Interconnect, taking the principle of the ICC ARM system

For the GPU, c ‘. is the Mali-T880 MP12 ARM is the game, with 12 processing units. In comparison, the Kirin 950 HiSilicon Huawei Mate 8 also uses a Mali-T880 but with only 4 units of computation while the Mali-T760 of the Exynos 7420 incorporates 8. With a new architecture – 50 % of arithmetic and logic unit (ALU) extra – we can expect, at equal frequency, a gain of 2.25x in terms of graphics performance . Samsung also announced the support screens 4K / UHD.

As Qualcomm, Samsung has also treated the modem part, directly integrated into the SoC. This new modem, dubbed Shanon, supports 4G category 12 in the downlink direction and 13 in the up direction for respective flow rates of 600 and 150 Mbps. This is the same technology used by Qualcomm Snapdragon for its X12 modem integrated into the Snapdragon 820.

Finally, as the Snapdragon 820, the process 14LPP (Low Power Plus) which is used in instead of 14LPE (Low Power Early) of the Exynos 7420.

What differences in performance expected?

As we can see, the differences are not very important, theoretically at least, between the two solutions. There are, however, unknown at this time how the Galaxy S7 and S7 Galaxy Edge quad-heart or octo-heart will they behave? Finally, there are also different GPU that could affect graphics performance.

In fact, the GPU (graphics chip) is the most important element for measuring the graphics power of a chip. The Snapdragon 820 integrates an Adreno 530 developed by Qualcomm, while the Exynos 8890 features a Mali-T880 MP12 developed by ARM. If one believes the results in the chart benchmark GFXBench, both SoC be neck and neck. Anandtech has indeed measured 30 frames per second on the Manhattan scene in OpenGL ES 3.1, 45 FPS on the same stage in OpenGL ES 3.0 and finally 90 FPS T-Rex in OpenGL ES 2.0. The tests were carried out on a wide and thick growth of smartphone incorporating a Snapdragon 820.

Manhattan ES 3.1
  • Exynos 8890 32
  • Snapdragon 820 30

Manhattan ES 3.0

  • Exynos 8890 47
  • Snapdragon 820 45

This is theoretical results on different platforms, which does not mean that the Galaxy will have similar results. What one observes, they are better in “Multicore” for the Exynos solution, which seems logical. It will, on this side, compare the respective autonomy of the two versions, that is where the difference could be felt hearts.
