Samsung renewed its offer of premium shelves with its new Galaxy Tab S2. Available in 8 and 9.7-inch slates new Samsung appealing in appearance, but leave an aftertaste like half measures. Report of first impressions
Peeling the list of characteristics, hard to go wrong. 8 inches and 9.7 inches, a 4: 3 and a definition of 2048 x 1536 px, new Tab Samsung S2 are cut to face the iPad. The new incarnation of Samsung range of top shelf brings with it some changes menus in terms of power, but nothing revolutionary. This year the focus was on the design and the will to insert the shelves in a productivity-oriented segment.
As a reminder the two slates share a data sheet, that is, octal-core Exynos 5433 ie a processor with four cores running at 1.9 GHz and 4 other 1.3GHz, 3GB RAM, 32 or 64GB of internal memory (expandable via micro SD up to 128GB), the traditional 802.11 WiFi / Bluetooth 4.0 / GPS and fingerprint sensor on the middle button. Still photography, tablets are seen equipped with 8 MP main camera and a 2.1 megapixel front sensor. It will of course depend on Android in its version 5.0, covered the house TouchWizz interface to run it all. The version will be 9.7 inches with a 5870 mAh battery while the model 8 inches will only 4000 mAh.

As for the 8-inch model generation (replacement for the 8.4 inches), it has a battery of 4000 mAh against 4900 mAh on the old model. And even if the battery supports a lower resolution screen than the last Tab S, the difference may nevertheless be felt. To see therefore in use, if Samsung was able to perform miracles. The other downside is the relief at the camera, similar to that found on the S6 and S6 Edge. Nothing handicapping to use, just choose the questionable aesthetic quality.
Side camera, the main sensor is able to deliver decent shots in good light conditions. Yet should we accept to take pictures with an 8-inch or 9.7 device. The front camera does not do him wonders. We are dealing here with pictures of just ok quality. With 2.1 million pixels, you could not expect shots of extraordinary quality. For a tablet duo oriented productivity, we would have liked to find if only 5 million pixels front. The speakers, in turn, deliver an average, no surprise.
Even screen, different ratio
But the most noticeable change on Tab S2 is the passage of 16: 9 to 4: 3. Screen ratio already adopted by most of the top models of current range. Where the 16: 9 format was heavily loaded with videos and games, the 4: 3 is built for productivity. For Samsung, this transition is explained by the fact that the main use of a tablet by the general public remains the consultation and writing email. The screen is still one of the highlights of Samsung. Super AMOLED technology flatters the retina in all circumstances and if the definition 2048 x 1536 px is slightly below that of last year’s models (2560 x 1600px), it does not stain as long as it offers of resolutions 264 and 320 pixels per inch for models 9.7 to 8 inches respectively (against 359 and 288ppp for previous generations). Web browsing is still a fun and made general remains clean, with crisp, chiseled characters.
A well supplied ecosystem
To succeed as a web consultation and machine production, Samsung focuses on the additional content by offering two months’ subscription to Monde.fr and the newspaper Equipe.fr and 3-month subscription to the magazine LeKiosk and the streaming service Google Play Music All Access .
The software bundle includes the entire Microsoft Office suite as well as 100 GB of storage onedrive offered and valid for two years. If the Tab S2 are attractive appearance devices, they are unfortunately in their race for competitiveness a little too many concessions. The meager performance gain can not hide the regression carried out on the battery and on the definition of the screen. Difficult to understand how a tablet can output in 2015 less than the previous generation of these key areas such as the display and autonomy.
