IFA 2015 – Samsung Car Mode for Galaxy: drive! – DigitalVersus

In his speech on the Internet of Things, an area that Samsung wants to explore and mark its paw, it was also question of connected car including a partnership with BMW and Volkswagen story to counter carplay and Android Car.
During his long press conference where, among other products, the amazing shows connected Gear S2 was unveiled, Samsung has also addressed other issues, including promising and lucrative field the Internet of Things (IoT). The opportunity for the Korean company to announce a partnership with German automakers BMW and Volkswagen.

A home automation history at BMW

So the partnership between BMW and Samsung focuses on the home automation program “Smart Home” or house connected via a system called SmartThings. From a server, it is possible to receive notifications of the proper functioning of the house directly on the dashboard of his car; in return, the driver can activate certain remote commands, such as opening or closing the garage door, the temperature setting, activation or deactivation of alarms, lighting or extinguishing of lights … in the video by Samsung (see end of article), you can even see the driver order his BMW i3 going to park alone.

Volkswagen vote an alternative against Apple and Google

Samsung wants to be the party in regard to the connected car. Thus, during his press conference, he presented the application “Car Mode for Galaxy”. As its name suggests, it is to interact Galaxy smartphone range with a Volkswagen vehicle via Mirror Link (wired connection) with the already existing application at the automaker “Car-Net e-Remote” . Then appear on the screen applications such as music, navigation, telephone or messages. The applications in question should in no way distract the driver. This can trigger actions from the touch screen of the car, control buttons on the steering wheel or via voice assistant S-Voice. The geolocation of the vehicle, closing, etc., can also be controlled remotely from a watch connected as the new Gear S2 for example.

It must be admitted, the connected car is a market that attracts many lusts and all kinds of new players, including Apple and its carplay system and Google with Android Auto. A majority of car manufacturers (? And self OEMs) do not wish to be subject to one or other of these systems; loopholes solutions as offered by Samsung, are therefore welcome. Stay tuned …
